Soul Guru: Switch from Depression to Expression

The weather, work, health and family are all things that can add to life’s daily stresses, leaving you with the weight of the world on your shoulders. A depressive illness is an overwhelming feeling which dulls thinking, impairs concentration, drains energy, disrupts sleep and removes interest in everyday activities.

Feeling down from time to time is a normal part of life, but when life throws curves balls in your direction there are a few things you can do to beat the daily blues.

If you are feeling depressed, try this exercise to life your spirits:

  • First, write down how you feel – this may include sadness, anger, fear, doubt and frustration. Do this without judgement. You are just getting it out of your consciousness.
  •  Then, take your time to write down all the ways that you love to express yourself. It could be singing, dancing, writing, painting, drawing or just walking in the woods.
  • Now, burn the first list as a symbol of letting go and taking your attention off the challenge you face.
  • Then, a little bit each day, choose to do something that you love to express. Notice how you feel when you express what you love. Notice how you feel when you bring into your awareness the artistry of your creativity.
