In 1979, Delane, the Visionary Director of Mount Eden created RESTRINGING/dynamics of inner development, a not for profit organization to promote holistic education. She was inspired by the “human potential movement” which was the brain child of Dr. Carl Rogers, the founder of Humanistic Psychology. The center opened on Route 202 in Flemington, NJ and offered a variety of seminars and workshops designed to give participants an opportunity to learn and grow.
Although the ideas and concepts promoted at the center were far from the mainstream, the unique offerings excited and attracted people who were looking for alternatives not generally available elsewhere, and these adventurous few were the mainstay of the center. RESTRINGING grew organically over a period of 8 years, until it outgrew the limited space it occupied, and Delane was faced with making a choice to expand or close.
Since she was wearing all the hats, as well as working in her family’s real estate business, her workload was quite heavy, so she attempted to get some assistance in order to expand, however no suitable candidates appeared. So, reluctantly, she closed the doors of the place which had been the scene of many transformative experiences.
After a year of luxuriating in time to enjoy life and smell the roses, Delane felt her time was being wasted. She had explored the fields of consciousness, and needed to move ahead with what she had learned. She and a friend journeyed to Omega, a summer camp in Rhinebeck NY to attend a conference on spirituality. While driving in the area, she noticed a large white house at the top of a hill with a serpentine tree lined driveway leading up to it. “I’d love to have a place like that” she said to her friend. Several days later, she returned to her home in Flemington, and her husband Harry told her that he had seen a large property that he wanted to buy. They went to look at it. A long serpentine tree lined driveway led up to a badly neglected farm which looked like a jungle. There was a large white manor house and many outbuildings. Everything needed major work. Delane was dismayed. “This place is going to take a million dollars and years of work to make it habitable.” Harry said “this could be the retreat you have been dreaming about.”
They went home, and went to sleep. That night, she had an epic dream. She saw hundreds of people on that land, and they were all in bliss. When she awoke, Harry was sitting by the side of the bed. “If you don’t want the place, I will buy it and resell it” he said. Delane and Harry returned to the property and walked all around through waist high grass, abandoned houses, and old barns. She noticed the varied terrain, fields and meadows, woods and ridges, boulders and wetlands, tall old trees, a pond, a pine forest and more. This was the other side of the coin. She walked into a 19th century abandoned farmhouse, and a sense of déjà vu swept over her, causing all the hair on her arms to stand up! Two hundred year old chestnut tress shaded the old house. She had been having recurrent dreams about this very house, and the two trees, for years!
Harry and Delane wasted no time. They arranged to buy the property that day. On the next visit Delane thought, “This is just like the Garden of Eden, but since it’s on a hill, it will be named Mount Eden”. Then she realized she had been born in Mount Eden hospital, on Mount Eden Avenue, in the Bronx, New York. Her parents had been married at the Eden Synagogue, and her mother’s name was Eve!
